Young Activists

Welcome, Young Activists! This program is designed for pre-teens and young adolescents (suggested ages 8-14) to explore what social change might look like and how to take such action.

As a Young Activist, you will meet once a week for 75 minutes in groups of ten or less. Sessions will include community-building, activities, and discussion centering around a weekly topic. At the end of the course, you will create your own change-making project with guidance from your facilitator.

Young Activists should expect 20-30 minutes of additional outside work per week.

Our summer program will run from first February 12 to April 30.

Register now to secure your spot!

Meeting times: Saturdays from 12-1:15 PM EST

*Please let us know if this time doesn't work and we'll see what we can do.

Common Curriculum

The curriculum begins by exploring the imperatives and motivations for doing this work (change-making and its importance), and then will explore how young people can make change in their communities (learning about change-makers). We’ll then learn specific strategies that we can use (strategies) and then apply them to causes we each care about (becoming a change-maker).

Learning Objectives:
  • Students will be able to identify reasons to get involved in social change

  • Students will be able to give examples of how activism can make change

  • Students will understand that change-making takes many different forms, and will have some knowledge about various forms

  • Students will be able to identify several young people who have worked to make a difference in their communities

  • Students will have an arsenal of strategies that they can use to address a problem in their communities

  • Students will develop a project that interests them doing work in their community

Essential Questions:
Change-making and its importance:
  • What is activism?

  • How can activism help us move from our current society to an ideal one?

  • Why do we need activism?

  • What is my personal stake in crafting a new world?

Learning about change-makers:

  • What does a change-maker do?

  • What motivates someone to overcome obstacles and make a difference?

  • Who can be an activist?

  • What are various ways to make change?

  • What are the pros and cons of various modes of change?

  • How do you work with others to create change?

Becoming a change-maker:

  • What is my vision for the world?

  • How do I bring about that vision? What resources do I need?

  • What are my strengths? How can I bring about change?

  • How do I incorporate change-making into my life?

  • How does my position affect how I am able to make change? What things do I need to consider about my positionality?

  • What is something that I can do to take action in my community?

Fees & Aid

Although ideally we would offer our fellowship free-of-charge, it would be impossible to provide the best experience possible without any costs. And, as we are students, we cannot carry these financial burdens alone, so we have set up a simple fee system for all.

We are believers in equity, so we urge all of our participants to pay according to their means. Currently, we have a three-tier fee program. The $50 basic participation fee will cover the program's maintenance costs, and any contribution above that will be used to sponsor other students' participation and book costs.

Basic Participant

We ask that all participants pay $50 to enroll in our program. Costs will go to maintain the program, cover facilitators' costs, and to fill in monetary gaps of needed financial aid for students.

Participant & Sponsor

Not all students can spare $50 for the course. If you wish to be a sponsor, your participation fees will cover the operating costs of another fellow.

Pay What You Can

We understand that not everyone has equal financial means. If paying the $50 participation fee is not an option, we ask that you pay what you are able. Think about what would be a personally significant contribution. We appreciate as much as you are able to pay, and your payment will go to cover our operating costs.
